Fred had been on security detail at the front door for only ten minutes when he felt a tug on his pantsleg. He looked down to see a child... no, not a child. Not quite a dwarf either, but the strange outfit made him look like something out of Harry Potter.
"Uh... can I help you?"
The little man raised a hand to him, holding up something Fred couldn't quite make out. He reached down to pick it up and as he raised it to his eyes to examine, he felt a current running through his fingers. It was almost unnoticeable...
It was nothing. It must have slipped out of his hand, but suddenly he held air. He looked down to find ot and discovered the stranger gon too. He shrugged it off, spending the rest of the day doing nothing. Once his shift was over, he went home to a beautiful wife who cooked him a delicious casserole and made love to him for dessert. To top things off, there was no talk of having kids. It was a perfect day...
Across the street in the van, Joker could see the smiling guard opening the door for the Mad Hatter. Fred looked quite peaceful in his Wonderland...

The Joker cackled visciously as the front door opened. "Boys, let's go get some laughs." Several men in clown makeup and holding guns jumped out of the van that went skidding away as soon as the thugs had left. As the colorful group walked into the bank the Joker tipped his hat to the smiling guard and the little man beside him. As the men walked forward carrying their large bags and guns the Joker fired his gun into the air. "Everyone, remain calm...you're all going to die."

There was panic, but that was nothing unusual. Jervis Tetch sat in a chair, legs swinging as the clowns brought order. When the Joker had shut them up, the Mad Hatter scampered about quickly placing his toys upon each person.
When he was finished and the Joker had his pawns, he grinned to the Joker, "Come and gather together for the supper of the great God, that you may eat the flesh of kings, the flesh of captains, the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of horses and of those who sit on them, and the flesh of all people, free and slave, both small and great.”
Well, that was most certainly not Lewis Carroll...

The Joker only laughed at the little man's speach, he had already killed off three people just in storming the place. It was a happy day. As his clowns placed all the hostages into a central area the Joker looked on thinking of how beautiful their corpses would be, what laughter he could get from them before they died. How terribly ironic their fate was. "Gentlemen destroy the camera systems and get the vaults open." He pointed a long white finger at the puppets. "Use them." It was always best to spell everything out to henchmen...they never did seem to understand his plans...it was almost as if they were crazy. "And get me a camera we have a show to put on before the police arive."

The smiling zombies did as they were told. They weren't very clever, but they always did what was asked of them. Their minds trapped in Wonderland, the Mad Hatter could command their bodies to perform the most degrading of tasks, even suicide...
As the camera was set up, the Mad Hatter sharpened a knife, whistling an unknown tune. The goons kept theor distance from him.

"Order them to act afraid." The Joker whispered to the Mad Hatter. "There's no surprise for Batsy if he sees them all their smiling."

With a slight tilt of his oversized hat, he transformed their fairy tales into nightmares. Their faces quaked and cried, uttering moans now and then.
"Laugh and the world laughs with you. Weep and you weep alone."

The Joker's smile widened as he stared at the faces before him, laughing, crying, tormented. They were astounding. He wanted them. He wanted all of them, forever. "Light's. Camera. Action." He called and one of the thugs turned on the camera and pointed it at the crowd. The Joker started to laugh as he panned the width of the crowd coming to rest on the Joker's face. Being sure to leave the Mad Hatter out of the picture. "Evening Gotham, it's the Joker here at the First Bank of Gotham. And what a fun time I'm having!" The camera pans again to several crying faces. "But there are some who want to stop my fun. Terrible isn't it. Those who just can't see the humor of things." The Joker grabs a crying elder woman from her chair. "You can can't you?" She only cries in terror. "Oh...pity." Without flinching the clown shoots the woman in the head. "You should always learn to find the humor in everything? Right Batman?" The Joker laughs again. "I will murder a hostage every hour until our dear Dark Knight arives...alone. If I see a policeman outside this building...well there will be a lot of laughs." The Joker laughs again. "See you soon Batsy." The Joker blows a kiss to the camera before it the thug turns it off. "Now put it at the front step for the good old boys in blue to find."

--------------------------------
Two hours later, the GCPD had already planted themselves outside.
Detective Harvey J. Bullock stared at the press line at the end of the street, spit, then turned to the Comissioner...
"Cripes, I hate this town so much. I don't know who I want to shoot first, the Joker or those worms by the tape..."
"If you hate it so much, why do you live here?" asked the comissioner, sipping warm coffee that was quickly going cold.
Harvey shrugged. "I like my job... at least here, I don't have to worry about superfreaks stealing my paycheck just because I don't have X-Ray vision...."
Gordon chuckled. "Still, you must wish we had sometheing better than a few overworked, underpaid cops sitting in the cold, nerves shattered over the next move some nutjob's going to make without a moment's notice..."
The detective stared at the bank for a moment before replying, "Only days like this."

Special Agent Cosgrave flashed his credentials as he approached the commissioner. He knew no one, but the SAC had ordered him here. Quickly identifying Commissioner Gorden, Thomas walked up to him. Offering the distinguished man his hand Cosgrave said, "Special Agent Thomas Cosgrave, how can the FBI help out Commissioner Gorden?"

He accepted the hand, replying, "I assume you know enough about our lovely city to know how quickly things like this go bad. Right now we're holding off until we can get inside, but we're wondering if you guys might be naive enough to loan us a hostage negotiator. All of ours have been shot or maimed doing their job, except for one who just got done recovering from the Joker's toxin only last week."
Detective Bullock snickered, breaking into a cough a little too late to conceal his amusement.

Thomas nodded, before saying, "It is not something we are called on to do very often. I have gone through the training, and aidded a negoitator at a Stand off by an Oregon Militia a couple years ago. If you have no one more qualified I will do it."
Examing the building, he asks, "Do we know who is in there?"

Gordon pulled out a notepad to read off a few items. "The Joker... probably half a dozen men... we think two dozen hostages... one witness reported a small child in costume with them, most likely a hostage he brought with him to make the security guards cooperate more easily."
"Fucking psycho..." murmured Bullock.
"And a few bags... probably to store the loot in."

"The Joker." Cosgrave winced, "Send in your SWAT team, this very moment. They are all dead, maybe we can pull a couple of survivors before the traps spring shut."
Waiting a moment he added, "I will still call if you wish, but he is not a man I think I will be able to reason with."

He set down the coffee mug on the top of a car and removed his glasses to clean them. looking at the special agent with his amazingly expressive eyes, "I know I can't stop you, Cosgrave, but I can tell you this... the Joker might have stupid motives, but he rarely makes stupid moves. He's probably sitting in there hoping for the mayor or some hotshot to make that exact move. Last time we sent in the SWAT team, he had drilled a little exit into the sewers and rigged the place to explode when we came through the door. We lost most of our team that day. Right now, I have good men running through the sewers making sure he's not doing the same thing, but I very much doubt it. He likes to think of himself as an artist."
He put his glasses back on. "You know, I should really consider contact lenses. They're always fogging up."
