As you can see, you are in fact assigning actual values to each of your skills.
Say Johnny the Thug gets into a fistfight with Batman.

Well, Batman, clearly has an advantage, but taking into account all those environmental anomalies, I can roll in certain advantages for Batman. For example, is Batman tired? Is Batman distracted? Does Johnny the Thug have a special move up his sleeve?
In the end, the numbers seem almost irrelavent but are still critical. My point is that they DO matter, but not nearly as much as you might think.
By the way, Batman kicks Johnny's butt. Duh!
