"Leaving? You had Tony Zucco in your bathroom! GCPD's been after him for years! Hell, Gordon's wondering if he should give your old job back or just promote you now!" Red soon realized he was in an ambulance in front of his house, talking to someone he vaguely recognized as one of the newer rookies when he was still on the force.

Red opens his eyes, though the action seems to pain him. "Zucco? Seriously? I mean, yea, I know. There's a reward for him, right? How much?"

"Like... 50,000 or something? You should ask Gordon, he's coming over now..."
A man in his late forties stepped into Red' view. Something about him screamed 'wise veteran', though whether it was the prematurely gray moustache or the large glasses, people were never sure.
"Hello, Sergeant Redford... I see you finally went and turned your attitude around... ten years of trying to bring this guy in and you do it in one drunken night... incidentally, you alcohol blood levels above the legal limit, but I think I'll let it slide this one time."

"Evening chief, good thing I had to sell my car for booze then, right? There's always a silver lining if you look hard enough," he said, then added, "well... no, not always," with a dark expression.
"So, what did I win?"

He scratched his chin. "You want forty-seven thousand dollars in booze money it's yours, but if you want a job, I can give you your old one back... if you shape up."

Red looked determinedly at Gordon for awhile before finally speaking.
"I'll take the cash."

"This was a one-time offer, Red." He didn't seem too disappointed. "Paramedic wanted me to ask if you're fine or if you want to take a trip to the hospital and get those bumps looked at... Zucco sure put up quite a fight."
He lit himself a cigarette.

"Yea, well I don't imagine he's looking too pretty either," he said, grabbing the cigarette from Gordon's mouth and walking off taking a hard drag from it.

Gordon didn't chase him, but he did yell out, "...forget the offer, you're still one of the worst cops I know!"
He then informed the other police they they were leaving. Their job was done.

A worse one then you know, Gordon, he said to himself, with a disbelieving chuckle as he thought about the night's events.
Fucking Batman, what a guy.

Red was pouring over newspaper clipings, a sure sign he was sober, but an ever surer sign that he'd soon be drinking away another onslaught of depression. The clippings were all dated from roughly three years ago. There was no need for him to read them, he knew most of the articles by heart he had read them so many times already, but still he went over them. They were the only thing he had, the only insignificant little lead, if they could even be called that.
He scanned them carefully for any little detail he'd missed, any little piece of information that might reveal something to do with his family's dissapearance. He read on late into the night, by the light of his small bedside lamp. For hours he was lost in the printed letters, until finally pre-dawn light started filtering into his room. He stood, the old familiar feeling of complete powerlessness welling up inside his chest. He needed to take the edge of it, needed to get some relief. He walked over to his freezer and pulled out a cold bottle of vodka, it was expensive stuff, the reward money was not going to waste.
Pouring himself a tall glass, he moved over to a seat by the window and stared out at the slums while he slowly got drunk.

Somewhere at the faint edges of his haze, he heard a light shuffling at the door, newly installed with reward money after the Bat had torn it apart.

Red stared at the door, wondering whether he cared enough to find out who was doing what outside his door. Eventually, he decided he best make sure it wasn't one of Zucco's thugs come to get revenge, so he picked up his gun and moved over to the door.
He pressed the barrel of the gun against the door, and opened it only as far as the chain latch would let it.

There was nothing he could see, though his ears informed that he had stepped on something... a small envelope that had been slipped under the door.

Red rubbed his stubbled face, as he frowned at the envelope. He was interested in finding out what it said, but it was all the way down on the ground...
Eventually his curiosity won over, and he bent down with a bit of a groan and picked it up.
